"At John Moore, we consider ourselves accountable for protecting the health and safety of future generations, and upholding the honor and respect of the trades. So, we are opening our doors to 2nd thru 5th grade students to expose them to the trades and potentially inspire a rewarding, often lucrative, and stable career path."

We will divide the group into 6 even groups before arriving to save time. (I'll be sending the list of groups the day before the field trip.) Please get there by 8:50 so your kids don't miss anything.

These 6 groups will rotate through the stations simultaneously in 30-minutes intervals, allowing 5 minutes for the transition, and 25 minutes for the activity. The six trade stations consist of the following:

  1. Power Ranger Station: Discuss the basics of how an electrical system works. Students will be divided into two groups to complete a real-world wiring circuit housed in an open stud wall, and must race to turn on a light bulb/buzzer.
  2. Water Filtration Station: Discuss the importance of water quality. Demonstrate an organic ground-water filtration system compared to a manufactured filtration system. Then perform a water quality test using colored test drops that detect levels of pH, chlorine, etc.
  3. Royal Flush Station: Run a sewer camera through a mock “sewer system” to demonstrate how we can visually inspect the quality of sewer systems and diagnose issues.
  4. Water Works Station: Demonstrate the urban water cycle using real piping, water, valves, and circulating pump. Discuss the difference between sewer and potable water systems. Use the PEX tool to simulate a plumbing re-pipe and create PEX hula-hoops.
  5. Clear the Air Station: Use a real furnace to show the push and pull of high-velocity air. Use a safe substance (ex: fog or baby powder) to blast through the system. Add a filter to demonstrate how filters prevent dirt/debris from circulating inside homes.
  6. Junior Technician: Become an honorary John Moore tech! While educating the students on what it takes to become a licensed tradesman, we will create each student an official John Moore badge, customized with their name and photo, to take home.
