About the Event
Welcome to Novel Studies! Our goal is to encourage a deeper understanding of great literature through group discussion and study techniques authors use to convey their ideas. Each group has a discussion leader who will present the questions and ensure that everyone has an opportunity to present their ideas. Parents are to have a minority role, only stepping in to probe further if warranted. Every member of the group has an opportunity to select a month in which they will choose the book from the book list, prepare and share the discussion questions, lead the discussion, and provide the craft projects. In the event that there is an absence and the discussion leader is unable to attend the group will select someone to act in their place as discussion leader during the group discussion. The Discussion questions are essential. They are not merely to ensure that everyone read the book or that they comprehend the sequence of events and plot. Our goal is to dig deeper and discover the intentions of the author. How do the characters develop and change? What are the underlying themes and relationships in the book? What was the Authors intentions and can we learn anything about the author through their writing? What can we learn about the time period, setting or ourselves from the work? Are there any unique literary devices the author uses to convey their ideas? These are the types of questions we are hoping to discuss. Learning to delve deeper into literature takes practice, someone to bounce your ideas off and an opportunity to hear their ideas in return. Our hope is for everyone to walk away from the discussion with a deeper more meaningful understanding of the book, the intentions of the author, and perhaps themselves. If you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns please feel free to voice them. Thank you.
