Book Description:

Red is an oak tree who is many rings old. Red is the neighborhood "wishtree" - people write their wishes on pieces of cloth and tie them to Red's branches. Along with her crow friend, Bongo, and other animals who seek refuge in Red's hollows, this "wishtree" watches over the neighborhood. You might say Red has seen it all. Until a new family moves in. Not everyone is welcoming, and Red's experiences as a wishtree are more important than ever.

Disclaimers about book’s content: no

Discussion Topics: Moving, gentle friendship story tackles anti-Muslim bigotry.

Questions for students:

  1. If we had a a Wishtree what would you wish for? Why?
  2. Red says of Sugar that they need to “stand tall, reach deep.” What does that mean to you? Have you ever had to stand tall and reach deep?
  3. What do you think would have happened to the neighborhood and the animals if Francesca had cut down the tree?
  4. Red says that “Making others feel safe is a fine way to spend your days.” Who feels safe with Red, and how can you tell? What does Red do that makes others feel safe? Do you agree with Red’s statement? How do you make others feel safe? What do others do to make you feel safe?
  5. Why do you think the boy carved “leave” in the tree? When he sees all the wishes that say “stay”, what is he going to think?
