Book Description:

When young Trisha finds out her class at the new school is known as "The Junkyard," she is devastated at being in another “special” class. But then she meets her teacher, the quirky and invincible Mrs. Peterson, and her classmates, an oddly brilliant group of students each with his or her own unique talent. And it is here in The Junkyard that Trisha learns the true meaning of genius, and that this group of misfits are, in fact, wonders.

Disclaimers about book’s content:  Briefly touches on death and includes brief references to teasing/name calling of the children in the story who are seen as different. Big story in a little book that is uplifting and empowering for anyone who has ever felt out of place, and the friendship that can come from embracing someone different from yourself. Easy read as we head into the holidays and time is limited.

Discussion Topics: Misconceptions, friendship, resilience

Questions for students:

  1. Based on the cover and illustrations, what predictions can you make about the story?
  2. What kind of things might you find in a junkyard?
  3. How would you define “genius”? Is someone in your life a “genius,” and if so, why?

Materials students need to bring:  imagination

Activity, craft, or game: utilize their genius to transform simple craft supplies into a unique keepsake
